Blood will be withdrawn from a vein. The white blood cells are separated from the rest of the sample and then mixed with a small amount of radioactive material (radioisotope) called indium-111. These cells are considered "tagged." The tagged white blood cells are returned to your body via an injection into the vein 2-3 hours later.
A body scan will be completed 6-24 hours later. For the scan you will lay on a table. The machine detects any radiation given off by the tagged white blood cells. The computer generates an image from the detected radiation. The scan may take 1-2 hours.
